Around the world there are calls for journalists to be more accountable for mistakes and misdeeds. In Britain, at least half a dozen inquiries or investigations are underway related to events at News of the World. In Australia, political leaders have called for a review of media regulation. In Canada, a report commissioned by Quebec’s culture minister recommends establishing professional accreditation for journalists.
Join moderator Jamie Cameron, professor at York University’s Osgoode Law School, along with panellists John Honderich, chair of Torstar and former editor and publisher of the Toronto Star; John Owen, journalism professor at City University in London UK and former head of CBC Television News; and Brian Myles, journalist at Le Devoir and president of the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec; for a roundtable discussion on freedom of the press, public trust and calls for media regulation.

ABOUT OUR PANELLISTS
JOHN HONDERICH is Chair of Torstar’s board of directors and former publisher and editor of the Toronto Star. He has also served as Chair of The Canadian Press, Canadian Director for the World Association of Newspapers, and a director on the boards of the Canadian Newspaper Association and the Canadian Journalism Foundation. Honderich was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2004 and a Member of the Order of Ontario in 2006. He has also been Special Ambassador to the Mayor of Toronto and Special Advisor to the Premier of Ontario.
BRIAN MYLES is a journalist at Le Devoir and President of the Fédération professionelle des journalistes du Québec. For the past 13 years he has focused on legal issues, covering the Gomery Commission on the sponsorship scandal, the Supreme Court as well as major criminal trials. Myles is also a lecturer in the journalism school at the Université du Québec à Montréal and an administrator on the Quebec Press Council.
JOHN OWEN is Professor of International Journalism at City University in London where he teaches the post-graduate international journalism course. He is also an Executive Editor for Programmes for the Al Jazeera English Channel. He is the Chairman of London's Frontline Club. He is the co-editor (and contributor) to the 2008 book International News Reporting: Frontlines and Deadlines. He is a Trustee of The George Soros Open Society Foundation. He spent 20 years with CBC, 5 years as the Chief News Editor of TV News (1985-1990) & Chief of Foreign Bureaux (1990-1996).
ABOUT OUR MODERATOR
JAMIE CAMERON is a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. She is a constitutional law scholar with expertise on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and American constitutional law. Her long-standing interest in freedom of expression has led her more recently to focus on press and media issues. She has organized a conference which will take place on October 14, 2011, at Osgoode Hall Law School. The title of the conference is "In the Public Interest: The Law and Ethics of Investigative Journalism".
